Fashion designer Stella McCartney is supporting the Great Britain Team in the only way she knows, by designing the sports kit for British athletes at the 2012 Olympic Games.
It is like honestly once in a life time opportunity to be appointed creative director for Team GB, Olympics and for the Paralympics as well. Its incredible. Its beyond anything I could ever dream of. said McCartney about her new job.
As the creative director of Adidas, McCartney has designed various sportswear for the brand, but designing the kit for the Olympics is different.
To work on the competition wear for the Olympics is kind of insane, as a fashion designer you dont think to yourself Im going to get the opportunity to work with athletes at that level, the Olympic Games. It really is such an incredible thing to have any kind of contact with as a designer.
Addias have provided the kit for the athletes since 1984 and chosen McCartney as the designer for the 2012 Olympic because they wanted to have the most stylish and performance-enhancing outfits in the competition.
The main thing I want to do is to not in any way sort of get involved with making their performance not at its best. So for me I want to make them the best they can be. In order to do that Im obviously working with incredibly technical fabrics, Im dealing with silhouettes perhaps I wouldnt normally work with. So there are challenges, I have a million challenges. I have to make it look good on telly, I have to make it feel good for the athletes, I have to make it work. Technically it has to do its job. And you know theres a million challenges, but I think theyre all good challenges, you know, I like a challenge. McCartney talked on the challenges of designing the kit.
The athletes presentation suits and village wear will also be provided by Adidas.
McCartneys relationship with Adidas goes back to 2004 when she launched her first range for women with the brand.
The Team GB kit will launch in autumn 2010.
