  What do you do after you have won four medals at two Olympics? Would you retire? Would you stop working?

  English runner Sebastian Coe won two gold and two silver medals during the 1980s but that wasnt the end of his career in sport. In some ways, it was just the start. In fact, Lord Coes biggest victory might have been more recent, by leading Londons 2012 Olympic bid where London won the right to hold the games.

  Early life and athletics

  Sebastian was brought up in Sheffield and joined his first athletics team at the age of twelve. He says that he was inspired by watching the 1968 Olympics in Mexico on television. I was marched into a large school hall with my classmates and we watched pictures from the 1968 Mexico Olympic Games. Two athletes from our home town were competing, by the time I was back in my classroom, I knew what I wanted to be.

  Sporting career and success as athlete

  Coe was a middle distance runner, specialising in both 800m and 1500m and in 1979 he set three world records in 41 days in different races around Europe. In the 1980 Moscow Olympics he collected gold in the 1500m and silver in the 800m. He did this again four years later in the Los Angeles Olympics of 1984. He remains the only person to win two Olympic 1500 metre titles one after the other.

  Political career and leading the London bid team

  After retiring from professional sport, he turned to politics. He was a member of parliament from 1992 until 1997. When London announced that it was going to bid for the 2012 Olympics, he joined the team. By then he had become a member of the House of Lords and was known as Lord Coe. In 2004 he became the chairman of the bid. Lord Coes knowledge of sport and his ability to communicate with people went a long way to helping London host The Games. He wanted London 2012 to help inspire young people to do more sport in the UK and across the world. In 2005 the International Olympic Committee awarded the 2012 Games to London. The UK, London, Lord Coe and his team were all delighted.

  Why is he called Lord Coe?

  In the UK, someone who is called Lord is a person who has a high social position and is a member of the House of Lords. Some people get the title Lord from their fathers. The Queen gives the title to other British people who do worthwhile or amazing things and she made Sebastian Coe Lord Coe in 2000.

  Like all of us, Sebastian Coe is looking forward to for the London Olympics in 2012 but for someone who has been in the spotlight on the field and behind the scenes it must be more exciting. It has been many years since he first watched the Olympics but he says he is still inspired by the great movement.
